[12] Then beware lest thou forget the Lord, which brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage.
Forget = Heb. Shakach = means to neglect
A common word in Deuteronomy, second only to the book of psalms for usage.
Deut. 4:9
Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons' sons;
Deut. 4:23
Take heed unto yourselves, lest ye forget the covenant of the Lord your God, which he made with you, and make you a graven image, or the likeness of any thing, which the Lord thy God hath forbidden thee.
Deut. 4:31
(For the Lord thy God is a merciful God;) he will not forsake thee, neither destroy thee, nor forget the covenant of thy fathers which he sware unto them.
Deut. 6:12

Only three verse of scripture contain the word “neglect”
They are :
Matthew 18:17
And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican.
1 Tim. 4:14
Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.
Hebrews 2:3
How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him;
It is a tragedy when people are forgotton.

Mentally ill to be held before they break law
Melvyn Bragg, the president of the mental health charity Mind, yesterday called for immediate changes to Britain's mental health service.
'Abandoned' for 13 years
"Julie" was an 18-year-old student nurse in London when she was first admitted to hospital suffering from mental health problems. A severe personality disorder was later diagnosed. Now 31, she is being detained at a private psychiatric hospital under the Mental Health Act.
"It's very frustrating, and you feel abandoned by the whole situation," she said. "The mental health system seems unable to provide properly for people with severe personality disorders."
It is even more tragic when we forget our God.

Q. Why the description “from the house of bondage.”
Ans. In case they were prone to forget the awful nature of their time in Egypt.
[We can often fall into the trap of thinking we were better off in the world.]
[13] Thou shalt fear the Lord thy God, and serve him, and shalt swear by his name.
Compare: Matthew 5: 33-37
F.C. Cook says; one is a Legal oath the other is Everyday Life
[14] Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the people which are round about you;

We cannot escape the world. But we must not go after its idols.

[15] (For the Lord thy God is a jealous God among you) lest the anger of the Lord thy God be kindled against thee, and destroy thee from off the face of the earth.
[16] Ye shall not tempt the Lord your God, as ye tempted him in Massah.
[Massah] Read Exodus 17:1-7
Massah [means] Testing or Tempting
Meribah [means] quarrel or Complaint
Compare numbers 20:1-13
Exodus 17 at the beginning of the forty years, Numbers 20 near the end of the forty years.

See the contrast between verses 1-7 and 8-11
[17] Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the Lord your God, and his testimonies, and his statutes, which he hath commanded thee.
Diligent = Thesaurus = Hard-working, active, assiduous, attentive, busy, careful, conscientious, constant, earnest, painstaking, persevering, persistent, tireless.
Antonyms:
Careless, lazy, good-for-nothing.
[18] And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the Lord: that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers,
Note:
Not in the sight of men, but “in the sight of the Lord”
Compare the words of our Lord in Matthew six:
Matthew 6:1-6
Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven. [2] Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [3] But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth: [4] That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
[5] And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward. [6] But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
[19] To cast out all thine enemies from before thee, as the Lord hath spoken.
Note:
When we honour God He honour’s us.
[20] And when thy son asketh thee in time to come, saying, What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord our God hath commanded you?
Note:
We need to be ready for our Children’s questions.
[21] Then thou shalt say unto thy son, We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand:
Pharoah here is a type of Satan.
Consider Paul’s word’s:
Col. 1:12-13
Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: [13] Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:
[22] And the Lord shewed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his household, before our eyes:
[23] And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in, to give us the land which he sware unto our fathers.
Note;
The two-fold aspect of Salvation;
“And he brought us out from thence, that he might bring us in”
[24] And the Lord commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the Lord our God, for our good always, that he might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.
Note;
The practical benefit to us in keeping God’s commands.
[25] And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do all these commandments before the Lord our God, as he hath commanded us.
